While the hotel's façade proudly displays "Established 1625," this date was added during a 20th-century renovation by proprietor Mr. Mortimer Thomas, who believed his patrons wouldn't contest the claim, given the lack of definitive records. The earliest documented reference to the hotel dates back to 1729, capturing a whimsical moment when a fox, during a hunt attended by Squire Bowen of Camrose, eluded hounds by darting across the hotel's roof. ​

Architecturally, the Hotel Mariners stands as a testament to Georgian design, earning it a Grade II listing for its special architectural interest as a substantial coaching inn of the late Georgian period. Over the centuries, the hotel has undergone various modifications, including a significant cement rendering of its frontage in the early 20th century. Despite these changes, it has retained much of its original charm, with features like exposed wood beams and traditional oak décor. ​
